Southern demobilized soldiers, brothers Ben and Clint Allison traveling in Montana, in search of gold. They meet a wealthy businessman, Nathan Stark, they plan to rob and kidnap. But he offers them to become partners. They must convey a gigantic herd from Texas to Montana by the Bozeman Trail. On the way to Texas where they have to buy the cattle, they encounter a group of settlers with whom they share the food before the fire. The next day, they realize that the Sioux Indians are likely to attack the settlers. Ben goes back to see the destroyed convoy. It saves Nella Turner, sole survivor. While they are refugees in a cabin blocked by the snowstorm, she resists his advances, scorning its proposed move to a ranch in his hometown. Arrived in San Antonio, it is more indulgent towards Stark, sharing her ambitions. But during the ride back to Montana after a victorious confrontation with off-the-law, the tension between Ben and Stark grows again as they cross the Indian country, where Clint was killed. On the proposal of Ben, the herd strength without too much loss the way. Stark tries to stop Ben for his attempted theft but it fails. Far from revenge, Ben claims a small portion of profits, earning the esteem of Stark. The separation is painful for Ben Allison, but Nella, who changed opinion, soon to join him and agrees to share its mere existence.
